⟡ SHORT BIO ⟡
⟡ ARTIST STATEMENT ⟡
I am a mixed media artist. Growing up in a culturally mixed home, I was brought up learning to respect the cultures of others. That early exposure to multiple ways of seeing the world became a part of the foundation of my creative identity. It taught me to listen and value stories that come from places outside of my own experiences, and to approach every culture’s folklore and mythology with curiosity and reverence. Now, that sensibility is at the heart of my work as I draw inspiration from legends, oral histories, and symbolic imagery, weaving them into creations that are intended to honour their origins while allowing me to explore my own artistic voice. Before I start on new pieces, I like to spend time learning about the stories I want to portray by either reading or (if possible) speaking directly with people from the cultures the stories originated from. Doing this helps me to better understand not only the narrative, but also the values. I see my role as someone who can collaborate with these communities to not only keep their stories alive but to also educate myself as well. This approach helps my creative process and my finished work feel a bit more respectful and connected. Ultimately, my overall goal is to preserve these narratives while building a legacy of my own along with them. I want my work to be able to connect to people, serving as a bridge between reality and imagination. I want to connect people to the myths of their ancestors and invite others to discover worlds they’ve never encountered before. I think that as long as I am able to create, I want to keep exploring new ideas, learning, and honouring the stories that inspire me.
